A Home Built With Three Angles to Capture the Views
Colin and Jo Turner bought a piece of land in Melbourne’s coastal suburb, Mount Martha, and immediately knew they needed something that went beyond a standard run-of-the-mill property. So when architect, Chris Megowan of Megowan Architectural, arrived for his site visit and stood on top of his car, he knew there was something special on offer. Chris noticed three views on offer, the north over the Mornington Peninsula and Port Phillip Bay, over a nature reserve to the south, and another view over the west, and so Chris designed the home to capture these views.
Given the resulting form, collaborating with the builders was necessary for this job, so Megowan Architectural engaged KabSav Projects early on. With three angles, the home would be a challenge for the builders, but they don’t shy away from a good challenge.
Chris flipped the traditional two-storey arrangement, with the living areas placed on the first level, elevating the spaces and giving Colin and Jo the best possible view over the coast from where they spend most of their time.
The home uses a mixture of timber flooring, white plaster walls, off-form concrete walls, and cement sheeting. The way these materials are used gives robustness and durability to the home and a sense of light and softness.
The collaboration wasn’t just between architect and builder, and more often than not, the owners had a hand in a lot of the decision-making. For them watching these decisions come to life during the construction was exciting. However, and you probably can’t argue with them, being able to finally sit down and enjoy the view in their completed home was the most exciting part of the process.
