When Tonny and Cheng bought their warehouse loft-style house in Richmond, they saw a blank canvas. The home felt dark, it didn’t feel spacious, and the layout was unpractical and lacked any form of privacy, especially when it came to visitors and guests.

They enlisted their friend, but also architect, Wilson Tang of Sonelo, to re-design their home. Wilson was tasked with making the house feel lighter and brighter, more spacious, with better flow and connection, and provide space for them to entertain and have privacy.

The kitchen features a blue tile that comes down the wall and on the benchtop and wraps back up the wall, inspired by Wilson’s overseas travels. A shrouded island bench gives Tonny and Cheng plenty of food preparation space.

Tonny Djajadi wanted everything white with a light material palette and a clean and straightforward interior to inject colour and personality through their furnishing and decorating. The challenge for Wilson was ensuring that such a space wouldn’t feel character-less and proposed a bold idea of using pastel tiles in the bathroom.

A lime-washed oak timber floorboard was used throughout, replacing the dark, cold concrete floor with a sense of light and softness. A similar timber was matched for the stairs, continuing that material palette.

The home is night-and-day, with a more minimalist aesthetic with plenty of concealed storage space. However, the real difference comes from those feelings that are hard to describe, where they are excited to come home each day and what they feel when walking through their front door.
