This project was about, right from the start, this word that came to mind was enoughness, and for our family, what is enough?’
– Will Smart, Wolveridge Architects
Designed by Wolveridge Architects as the architect’s own home, The Cove explores what it means for a house to be enough. Rather than pursuing size for its own sake, the project uses compact planning, passive principles and a restrained material palette to create a calm home for his family in Torquay.
The site is far from straightforward. A battle-axe block, tight setbacks and multiple neighbours meant the shape of the land quickly shaped the house itself. The garage sits close to the arrival, the parents’ bedroom is placed to the west, the children’s rooms to the east, and the shared living spaces sit between them. High ceilings, full-height glazing, garden outlooks and glazed ends to the hallways extend the sense of space without increasing the building size.
Smartdeck timber cladding reinforces the home’s coastal character. Chosen for its thermally modified timber and expected durability in harsh Australian weather, it gives the exterior warmth, rhythm and texture while allowing the house to weather naturally over time. The Cove demonstrates that a smaller home does not need to feel compromised. Through restraint, clarity and careful planning, it becomes a place of calm for everyday family life.
