On an exposed mountain site outside Hobart, Eyrie House balances shelter and outlook through masonry, glass and a restrained response to place.
On an exposed mountain site in Mount Rumney, east of Hobart, Eyrie House by Matt Williams Architect is shaped by the tension between refuge and outlook. The home nestles into the slope to provide protection from wind, weather and bright Tasmanian light, while a lightweight structure projects outward to take in the panoramic view toward Pittwater.
The architecture moves through a deliberate sequence of enclosure and release, with a closed arrival, vertical entry void, and a main living space that opens across the landscape. Concrete masonry forms the protective base of the home, softening the harsh light while contributing thermal mass and calm. With expansive glazing from Rylock Windows & Doors, the outlook becomes central to the experience of the house, while a restrained palette of blockwork, concrete, glass and blackwood allows the surrounding landscape to take centre stage.
Eyrie House is a study in contrast, between heavy and light, enclosed and open, grounded and expansive. It turns an exposed site into a place of shelter without losing the view.
